A common cause of throat problems – especially in children – is tonsillitis.
The tonsils are glands located in the back of the mouth on both sides of your throat. As part of the immune system, tonsils help fight infections.
Tonsillitis is an infection in the throat that starts with your tonsils. These types of sore throats are usually severe, can be accompanied by fever and it hurts to swallow.
Symptoms of severe tonsillitis include:
- your tonsils are large enough to touch each other
- you see pus-filled sacs surrounding your tonsils.
Please seek medical attention straight away if you have any of these symptoms.
Treatment for tonsillitis
Tonsillitis can be dangerous. If left untreated, tonsillitis could damage organs in your body.
If you have tonsillitis more than five times within a year it is very important that you go to a doctor. Also, if your symptoms do not respond to antibiotic treatment, please see us immediately.
Treatment for tonsillitis usually involves antibiotics, but may also need surgery (a tonsillectomy).
